This cover forms the lower half of the engine crankcase and carries the support openings for the crankshaft and camshaft.
It joins the upper crankcase across a shaped gasket and provides the mounting area for the oil-pump components beneath it.
The joint gasket, oil-pump rotors and seal housing are separate parts.
